One dog, three kinds of painting

"Painting" covers a lot of ground. The same photo of the same dog can become a dark, glowing oil, an airy watercolor or a clean modern piece, and each changes the mood more than you'd expect. This page starts you on Classic Oil, the look most people mean when they say a dog painting from a photo.

How a photo becomes a painting

  1. 1

    Light

A phone photo is lit by whatever was around. A painting is lit on purpose. We relight your dog with a single warm source, the way portrait painters set up a studio, so the face models in light and shadow.

  2. 2

    Brushwork

Fur is rebuilt as strokes that follow the coat, broad in the shadows and finer around the eyes and nose. The marks are part of the image, so it reads as paint even on a phone screen.

  3. 3

    Background

Your sofa, the leash and the person holding it go. In their place, a painted ground that suits the style: deep umber for oil, white paper for watercolor, one calm color for modern.

What we never change: the dog. Same coat colors, the same markings in the same places, the same ears and the same expression. If a painting is beautiful but isn't your dog, it isn't finished, and you don't pay for it.

Questions, answered

What do I get with the HD download?

A clean JPG with no watermark at the full size the portrait was made (typically about 1024 x 1280 px), plus a print-ready version at twice that size (about 2048 x 2560 px). The exact pixel size is shown next to the download button. A Portrait Pass starts at $9 and unlocks every portrait in your account.

Can I see the same photo as an oil and as a watercolor?

Yes. After the first painting is done, pick another medium and paint the same photo again, no new upload needed. Many people try Classic Oil and Watercolor side by side before choosing the one for the wall.

Is there real paint texture on the canvas?

No. The brushwork is part of the image, printed on a textured canvas, so it reads like paint at arm's length, but the surface is flat. We'd rather say that plainly than have you expect raised paint.

Will you keep my living room in the background?

No. Each style paints its own background (Classic Oil uses a deep warm brown) and leaves out the room, the leash and any people in the photo. That's what makes it look like a painting instead of a filtered photo.
